My daughter is always putting things in her mouth and it scares more than anything else currently. I swear I have mini heart attacks when I catch her in the act. I’m constantly having to tell her “out your mouth” like a million times so I did some digging to find out what I could do.
It’s true that toddlers love putting things in their mouths. It’s a developmental process as they get older and try out how to do things with their hands and mouth, but it can be annoying as a parent not being able to relax when your kid is around.
Today I’d like to introduce you to chewlery more specifically the chew necklace.
It was able to redirect Mei’s undesirable chewing habits such as;
- chewing on clothes
- grinding of teeth
- chewing of pretty much everything non-edible
What is a Chew Necklace?
A chew necklace is a type of chewlery. It combines two things, the act of chewing and jewlery to create what we know as chewlery, it is somewhat fashionable chew toy in short. These chew necklaces are designed to be gnawed and chawed on as a mean of soothing or satisfying its users. For children with or without autism or ADHD this chew necklace is a perfect oral fidget as they can help them;
- Focus there attention
- Help with self regulating
- Provides sensory relief
- Redirect chewing of clothes, pencils, fingers etc
How to Choose your Chew Necklace
There are countless numbers of these necklaces out there. Some of which may be perfect for your child and suits all your chewers needs. And on the other hand they may not be suitable for your child.
There are different criterias your chew necklace should meet before purchasing .
Here is what I look out for.
1. Safety
One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a necklace. Whether or not it can be easily broken, to prevent choking hazards. I also take into consideration if the cord or claps of the necklace can be easily detached so as to prevent strangulation. Always, always research what materials they are made with.
Here is a list of safe materials
- food grade silicone,
- BPA free,
- phthalate free,
- lead free,
- and PVC free.
2. Durability
Chew necklaces are made with different types of materials some of which are softer and others a bit more durable for those more aggressive chewers. I believe that necklaces should be durable with great textures. So depending on the level of your chewer select wisely if you want a long lasting product.
Note* switching out chew necklaces every now and then is not uncommon.
3. Style
Depending on the age of the wearer style is important. Some may want a more discreet design while others may want bright and colourful designs. Also based on the style of necklace it can be easier to grip and hold.
4. Cleaning
First and foremost you want a necklace that can be easily cleaned . It’s going to be in the mouth for crying out loud . You want to ensure it is dishwasher safe or can withstand the boiling temperatures used to sterilise them.
How to clean Chew Necklace?
It is quite simple really. Luckily most chewable items can be placed in a dishwasher just remember to remove the cord.
If you prefer you could also use a mild dish soap with warm water to clean both the strap and chewable. This is pretty effective , ensure to rinse properly then allow the pieces to air dry or dry with a clean dish towel or paper towel.
Boiling is another effective method just remove cord and submerge chewable into water and boil for 2-3 mins.
Conclusion
Honestly If your child doesn’t already chew on stuff I wouldn’t introduce them to the chew necklaces, but if you have a child that destroying their clothes, nails, fingers and possibly chewing on harmful non-edible stuff . I recommend it as a less harmful solution.
